The Ageing Process
‘time and tide wait for no man’
Bony changes
As we age, the bone loses density and shrinks, causing loss of support to the overlying soft tissues (the skin and muscle). This creates larger eye sockets , loss of cheek projection which consequently look flatter, a shorter narrower jaw and smaller chin and changes to the shape of the forehead.
Strategically replacing these shrinking areas of bone with dermal filler is one of the keystones to ensuring the end result is a natural restoration found in a more youthful looking appearance.
Soft tissue changes
The face has numerous fat compartments at different levels, all of which undergo changes as we age. Generally the compartments shrink in size and/or start to sag. This results in hollow, flatter cheeks, heavier nose to lip lines and the ‘marionette’ lines and the appearance of jowls.
The overall effect is that the upper and middle parts of the face lose fullness and the lower part looks heavier. Placing the correct type of filler at the correct depth will help improve these adverse changes.
Changes in the skin layers occur due to intrinsic (from within and influenced by genetics) and extrinsic factors (environmental factors such as smoking, exposure to UV radiation or chemicals, trauma etc).
There is a reduction in the amount of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid and the epidermis layer (topmost layer) becomes thinner so it dries out.
Wrinkles appear due to decreased water holding power of collagen and hyaluronic acid. There are many ways to stimulate the cells responsible for skin maintenance and thus improve all the signs of skin ageing.

When we are young, we have high, full cheekbones, sculpted jawlines, and full temples creating a “triangle of youth”. As the aging process happens, this triangle of youth slowly inverts itself, becoming the “pyramid of age”. But not all is lost. There are ways to restore the “triangle of youth”.
